Our latest offering - Sumatra Fair Trade Organic - is outstanding. Our traditional Sumatra is really good, so I had high hopes when I ordered this bean and was not disappointed! To me this is everything a coffee should be, bold, sturdy, earthy, chocolatey, it has a smooth mouthfeel and a subtle but spicy aftertaste.
This is a truly excellent bean and a great value at our flat rate pricing.

These little beans pack a big and wonderful flavor! Have you tried a Tanzanian Peaberry coffee before? I'm betting if you have you loved it, and if you haven't you're missing out.
The Tanzania Peaberry bean has a very distinctive, football-like shape and they're about 1/3 to 1/2 the size compared to an average bean. This bean brews up with a nutty and mellow flavor with little to no bitterness. Trust me when I say this is an outstanding coffee, and well worth the little extra in cost... that's why it's a personal favorite of mine.
House of Monaghan's Tanzania Peaberry roasts up great from light to bold and at $18.00 per pound with free shipping in the US, the value on this delicious bean can't be beat.
A new bean from our local Portland supplier Mr. Green Beans has turned out to be a real star! Rich and nutty with a silky mouthfeel, this Panama Casa Ruis bean roasts up with a full and hearty flavor that is exactly what you want a specialty roast to be. Light roast for an earthy, citrus flavor, medium to medium bold for a full-bodied delicious flavor with hints of dark chocolate and molasses.
At any roast level, you can't go wrong with our Panama Casa Ruis - click here to order!
Remember, free USPS Priority Mail shipping is free with every order so you'll have your coffee within 2-3 days from the roast, which is the optimal time to brew for the best flavor.
I recently added 3 delicious beans that I love to the House of Monaghan online store.
This is my favorite of the three due to it's chocolatey qualities and roast great at medium, medium-bold and bold! My Honduras Organic beans are Certified Fair Trade, USDA Organic and Rainforest Alliance Certified.
Brazil Sitio Grota Sao Pedro
This pulped natural and semi washed yellow Bourbon varietal comes from the Serra da Mantiqueria region. I recommend roasting between light and medium as the beans are small and you don't want them over roasted. They're Certified Fair Trade and USDA Organic.
Rwanda Cafe Femenino
Certified Fair Trade, bold and powerful, this is a bean that is complex and delicious across the roast spectrum.
All are affordably priced and ship free for even more value.
I meant to get this up a while ago, but here's the verdict on the Guatemala FTO I blogged about last:
As much as I wanted this Guatemala FTO to be an awesome coffee, it just wasn't up to par. House of Monaghan is about amazing coffee, the kind that stops you in your tracks. This wasn't that, so that's gotta go. But there are plenty of taste bud tantalizing beans from Central and South America just waiting to be roasted and offered at House of Monaghan... so stay tuned.
After roasting a bean it needs to de-gas, ie. release the gases in the bean that the roasting process brought about. For me 48 hours is the key, I used to do 24 but then noticed all my coffees tasted better the second morning and on. So now every roast has to have at least 48 hours to reach its peak flavor… think of a whiskey or wine not being aged, same idea… it’s got to do its thing to be perfect.
So this morning’s rather dull Guatemalan will be solid cup of coffee tomorrow morning, and perfection on Saturday morning… another bonus of Saturday morning! But hey, I had to have my coffee this morning so I had to do what I had to do… even if it meant breaking my own rules. Coffee jonesing knows no rules or restrictions. That’s mug life for ya!
ps. If this Guatemalan Fair Trade Organic passes the Saturday morning taste test, then you just may see it in the House of Monaghan online store soon!
I've been roasting for a while now and finally decided to go pro with a commercial grade roaster from Sonofresco. It's a great roaster that allows me to create custom roasted pounds of coffee, so you can pick the bean you love and the roast you desire - then I create the perfect small batch, craft coffee for you.
This week I stopped into my local Portland supplier Mr. Green Beans for my monthly bean run. I love working with them, the face to face interactions with the folks who are actually traveling to the farms that grow and process the green beans is invaluable! I picked up an Ethiopian Sidamo, a Papua New Guinea Kunjin and the ever popular Tanzania Peaberry. I'd never tried a peaberry bean until I started roasting, now I'll always have one in stock when possible. I also grabbed a couple pounds of their Espresso blend to try along with some decaf beans. They're not for sale in the store yet, but my guess is they'll be great and make good additions to the House of Monaghan offerings.
Right now I'm sourcing my beans from Mr. Green Beans Portland and Sonofresco - both provide outstanding beans in both quality and price... plus buying from both gives House of Monaghan a great variety to offer you.
ROASTIN' MY LIFE AWAY!

Inspired by the budding coffee culture on my first visit to Ireland, I hope to bring a bit of the warmth, hospitality and magic of the Emerald Isle to each batch of coffee I roast!
